I got married when I was 18 years old. I was married to the man for 23 years. I finally got out of the marriage 4 years ago with the help of my boys. It all started after the birth of my first child, Kyle. I always wanted to be a mother. My ex-husband said he wanted children, but I don't think he really did want them.
People always wonder why you remain in an abusive relationship. My reasons were: I thought he loved me, He was really sorry for the things he did to me, and I wanted my children to have a family. That was a bad decision. What I put them through by staying with my ex-husband, was by far the worst decision I have ever made in my life. He hurt me physically and emotionally many times. In fact, I am lucky to be alive this very day. I wrote the poem Thoughts so you could get the general idea of what I went through. I also wrote a letter to my abuser which you can read below.
If I can help just one person to get out of an abusive relationship while they still can, I believe I have done a good job.
